Support complete streets & municipal autonomyRecruit others to join our petition defending safe & accessible streetsDear Members and Supporters, Bike Edmonton is urgently writing to you about a serious threat to the future of our local streets and your ability to cycle safely in our city. On April 17, 2025, Devin Dreeshen (Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, and MLA for Innisfail-Sylvan Lake) threatened to halt and reverse progress on Edmonton’s Bike Plan implementation. He has repeated these threats online and in the media several times since then. You may have heard of Bill 212 in Ontario, which gives the provincial government there the power to stop on-road bike infrastructure from being built, and the authority to remove existing bike lanes from municipal streets. Unfortunately we are now seeing the same threats in Alberta, despite written assurances as recently as October that the provincial government would not go this route. Meanwhile, Bill 212 is currently working its way through Ontario's courts thanks to a Charter challenge by Cycle Toronto. The same day Minister Dreeshen made his announcement, Bike Edmonton released a media statement denouncing this ill-conceived idea. We are monitoring the situation closely and working with other advocacy organisations across our province to oppose plans that take control of local streets away from municipalities. We believe this move could set potentially our city and our province back decades. Together with Paths for People, the YEG Bike Coalition, Bike Calgary and Vélo Canada Bikes, we’ve launched an urgent petition to stop this divisive, reckless and counterproductive idea from going any further. With only a few days left in the current legislative session before summer break, now is the time to fight for active transportation! Can you spare two hours this Saturday, or help during the week, to support our joint campaign? We aim to recruit another 1000 people this weekend to join the petition, and to help us get there we need teams of ‘Streeters’ to visit key locations in each city ward. Please join us for coffee/light breakfast and training at the Abby Road Housing Cooperative (10950 - 82 Avenue) this Saturday, May 10th between 9:00am & 11:00am. There will be a quick 20 minute training (rolling sessions every half hour), a photo op, and then you'll be dispatched to spots around the city (farmers' markets, festivals, patios, etc.). Feel free to bring a friend! Register HERE to attend on Saturday morning. (You can select the training time of your choice on the linked form.) Can’t make it Saturday but want to support this work?1) Share the petition online! Send the petition link to 10 friends around the city. BCC forward the invitation widely. Share with your employer, colleagues, neighbours, friends, family, community league members, or anyone who cares about safer mobility. 2) Hit the streets during the week If you have limited time Saturday, but can attend one of short training sessions, use the QR code (below) and supplied material to help canvass a target location (e.g., 102 Ave or 127th Street during the morning commute) this week.
3) Attend the Belgravia Bike Fest The Belgravia Bike Fest is this Saturday afternoon at Belgravia Community League (11540 - 73 Avenue) from 1:00am to 4:00pm. Meet other cyclists, organisations, and enjoy the fair weather.
4) Come to Kidical Mass Edmonton Join Let’s Bike There YEG for Kidical Mass Edmonton on May 25 at 11am at Rosslyn School (113A Street & 132 Avenue).
Thank you and happy riding! |
